How to improve the experience for your budget-conscious travellers

B&Bs and smaller hotels don't run like chain properties — no night staff, no guaranteed breakfast, no self-check-in unless it's specifically confirmed. That's exactly what gets missed.

As travel volumes climbed back toward pre-pandemic levels, budget-conscious travellers increasingly chose B&Bs and smaller independent hotels over chain properties. Good for the traveller's wallet — but these properties don't run on the same standardised playbook a big chain does, and that's exactly where bookings go wrong.

What can actually happen

  • No evening staff — reception closes early, and a late arrival can be locked out entirely
  • Breakfast advertised but not actually provided, leaving guests to find food in an unfamiliar area

Either one turns into a bad review and a refund conversation — and a customer who doesn't book through the same agency again.

What to check before the guest travels

  • Actual reception hours, and what late check-in requires
  • Whether self-check-in is genuinely available, and how it works
  • Special requests — honeymoon set-ups, dietary needs — actually landed with the property

Re-verifying a budget booking the same way as any other means the traveller who chose value over luxury still gets the trip they expected.
